Best Practices for Ministry 2016!

Greetings to you in the name of our Lord Jesus.  I am safely home once again.  Five of us went to Phoenix, Arizona for the church conference Best Practices.  It was such an awesome trip.  If you remember the details of my life, which I completely understand if you do not, I went to this conference last year as well.  Last year my friend Buck and I drove down from the seminary, attended the conference, and then continued on our tour of the south with a 4,000 mile road trip.  This year, five of us from Peace in Christ flew down for four days.  Ruth, our DCE, and her eight month old daughter Chloe, our two preschool teachers Miss Brittany and Miss Kari, and myself all attended the conference.  We all learned a lot, were encouraged, ate a ton of unhealthy food, and enjoyed the sun and warm weather.  The best joke of the conference came from a vicar at the closing service.  He was giving the details of trying to explain the conference to other people.
So as you are telling someone about this awesome conference, they ask, "How many people were there?"
     You say, "2000!"
"Wow, 2000?!," they respond. "How many did you know?"
     "About half."
I laughed very hard at that joke, because I did know so many people there.  The Lutheran world is a very small one.  However, that is also an exciting part of our church, is that some how some way we are always all connected.  There were a ton of my classmates from the seminary there.  I hadn't seen most of them since graduation, so it was so good to catch up, hear how their ministries are going, and just to see them again.
We got back to Duluth around 2 A.M. on Sunday morning.  Then I had to be at church for services and Bible Study.  I was tired, but got through it all alright.  I am still trying to catch up on sleep.  This week is super busy as I preach both Wednesday night and this weekend.  Also, I have the home inspection tomorrow on the new house.  I am also teaching confirmation classes on Mormonism.  I am super excited for that though.
The best part of the conference is always the encouragement of being reminded what ministry is all about.  It is not about getting bogged down with all the details, it is not about preaching the perfect sermon every Sunday, or making sure every service has zero mistakes, or teaching the most brilliant insights never heard before in Bible studies.  Rather, it is about loving lost, broken, sinful people.  It is about reminding those sinful people, including yourself, that Jesus has done all the hard work already.  He has accomplished the perfection part of ministry.  Now we have the opportunity to live every day in His grace, and to remind all those around us that if God has forgiven and redeemed a sinful person like me, He can and has most certainly done it for them too.  Jesus doesn't hand out grace once a day!  It's not like a new dose of grace is delivered at 6 A.M. and then as soon as you sin that day, now you have to wait until 6 A.M. the next day to receive that next dose.  Jesus showers His grace upon us all day, every day.  The moment we fail to live in that grace, we can immediately turn back to Him, confess and plead for His forgiveness, and know He hears us, He forgives us, and He continues to pour out that grace upon us in that very moment.  What an awesome way to go about your day knowing He is with you, His grace is raining down upon you, and you are forgiven!  You are a child of God.  You live in His grace.  He gives you the abundance of His kingdom now.  Go share that abundance and that grace with those in your life who don't yet know Christ and what He has done for them.

Excitement and Surprises

Greetings to all of you in the name of Jesus who is Lord of Lent, but more importantly Lord of Easter.  I have two bits of exciting news.  First, tomorrow I leave for Phoenix!!  The DCE, her baby, the two preschool teachers, and myself are all flying down for a church conference.  It will be a great couple of days. It is supposed to be in the low 90's or high 80's the whole time.  I am also excited because this will be the first time since graduation that I am seeing most of my classmates, well the ones who will be there anyway.  It isn't really ideal time being in the beginning of Lent, but luckily Pastor Ludwig is covering so I can still go.
The other exciting news is that I put an offer on a house and they accepted.  YAY! The whole thing was a gift from God really. (I mean every thing in my life is a gift from Him, but this especially!)  A guy from church asked me if I was looking for a house.  I told him I had been watching the housing market, but wasn't actively seeking anything since my apartment lease isn't up until August.  He told me he knew of a house that was just coming for sale.  Then as he began to describe it, it hit every item on my checklist for what I wanted but didn't think I would be able to find.  And I do mean EVERYTHING.  He said it comes with some acres of trees... CHECK.  It's an older house that might need some updates.... CHECK. (I wanted a fixer upper to put some sweat equity into.)  It's just outside of city limits... CHECK.  And it went on for a few more.  It does come with some land, 17.5 acres!  It is an older house, built in 1950 that needs some updates, but they are all cosmetic. It's a smaller 2 bed, 1 bath house, but has potential and plenty of room behind it to always build on. Everything structural about the house is solid.  It has a three car garage, how could I forget to say CHECK to that!  And the best part of all, it was under the lower end of my budget.  Again, truly a God-given, gift wrapped with a bow on top, thing.  So now that they have accepted my offer, we are in the inspection stage.  I am not worried about the home inspection, and not really even the well inspection since the lady who was living there was 96 (if any thing, there has to be something good in the water). The only part that worries me a little is the septic inspection.  Even if it has to be redone, which is most likely, the sellers agreed to pay for it.  It is more the hassle of the lender isn't sure if it has to be done before we can close.  However, I am taking it one day at a time, thanking the Good Lord each day along the way, and as of now if everything goes according to plan, we will close on May 5th.  Then I will only have one or two months of paying both my mortgage and my apartment rent, but that also gives me more time to move.
I am excited to be a home owner, and my mind hasn't quit thinking of new ideas for projects on the place.  However, I am just so grateful that the Lord has brought me to a place where I know will be home for a long time.  It is exciting to set down roots, especially after moving so frequently through college, the seminary, vicarage, etc.  I know I am truly blessed.
I gave up all T.V., Netflix, Youtube, and the such for Lent.  The first couple days I found myself almost going insane without being able to plop in the chair and grab the remote.  However, now that I am adjusting, I am finding I have more time to read, to actually get things done around the house that I kept putting off and the like.  Amazing how that works.  Actually it is kind of sad how much time I waste in front of the TV.  This weekend, I started and finished C.S. Lewis's Screwtape Letters.  If you have never read it before, I highly suggest it.  That man was a genius.  It was also very fitting, because I decided to preach on the devil this last weekend with the temptation of Jesus text.  I wasn't quite sure how it would go over, or exactly what people would think.  But to my surprise, I actually got a lot of reassuring compliments, not only that they thought it was a good sermon, but that they learned something new, or at least thought about it differently than they had before.  The Holy Spirit is good!  Now I am working on reading the Abolition of Man.  I still am not a huge fan of reading, but do have to admit I learn more valuable things from books than from TV shows.  Now ask me two weeks after Lent, and most likely I will have caught up on the Netflix shows I have been missing, but maybe I can make a compromise of a few nights of reading, a few nights of TV.
I hope you are having a good Lent season as we all prepare for that most glorious of all holidays, Easter!!!!  God bless you all.  Amen.

Life gets busy, but still be steadfast in the Lord

Greetings to you in Christ's Holy name.  January was a blur.  I cannot believe Lent starts next week already!  I am in one of those times where Christmas feels like it was literally just yesterday, but at the very exact same time feels like it was six months ago already.  So just to catch you up quick, in January, we hosted the blood drive, I went on an ice fishing trip, all of our small groups started back up, as well as all of the normal stuff.  The blood drive went alright.  It did not goes as well as I had hoped, we had twenty people come through that day.  However, this was the first time Peace in Christ has ever hosted a blood drive so I guess you have to start somewhere.  Next year, when we do it again, we plan to get a committee together and do both a phonathon asking for people to pledge to come give, as well as send out reminders the day before.  I really just assumed with as large a congregation as we have, we would have no problem filling the time slots.  However, that was still twenty more people than if we didn't have one and we learned from it.
The ice fishing trip was a blast.  Eight of us guys left around 1 on a Friday afternoon and drove up four hours to the Lake of the Woods which is right on the Canadian border.  We stayed in a lodge, more like a motel, where two rooms each had four single beds.  It was nice though.  We went out to eat Friday night and then played cards in one of the rooms.  However, everyone was pretty tired from working all week and the drive, so we called it a night fairly early.  Then we were up at 6 on Saturday morning to get ready, get coffee, and head out to the lake.  We were able to drive our vehicles right out onto the lake.  You drive across the four mile harbor, and then across a strip of ground and then out onto the big lake.  We drove about six miles out onto the ice.  I have driven on frozen lakes before, but this was crazy how there was a road system leading to all kinds of little villages out on the ice.  We all felt like ice road truckers.  Then we had rented two houses from the lodge.  Luckily they were pretty close to each other so we could walk back and forth to share food and check out each other's fish all day.  It was a fairly nice day in the 20's, but the wind was blowing making it a little colder.  The nice thing about renting the houses was the fact that they leave the heaters on all night so they are nice and warm, but also the holes are still clean and ready to go.  So we pretty much walked into the houses, got our lines ready and were fishing early.  Sure beat having to drill holes, clean them out, set up tents, etc.  Don't get me wrong, I still like to rough it fishing, but when you drive that far to fish one day, you want to spend as much time as possible actually fishing.  Our house caught a lot fo little 8 or 9 inch walleye and saugers.  We caught a couple bigger tullibee which everyone said they aren't good for eating, but us newbies kept them anyway.  Then Joe, one of the guys in my house caught a 23 and half inch walleye which was an exciting battle.  The other house had all the luck and caught 11 keepers.  We packed up about 4:30 and headed back in.  The guides cleaned our fish for us and we took them to a local restaurant where they cook up your fish for you.  So we did appetizers, the fish, and pizza family style so everybody got to enjoy some.  We had a few drinks and then went back to the lodge which had a heated garage with tables and chairs.  We started playing cards and ended up playing until 1 in the morning.  It was a blast of laughing, poking fun at each other, and getting to know everyone better.  Then we packed up and came home first thing Sunday morning.  We already have plans to go back next year, except we are going to rent a cabin which can sleep ten guys and we plan to fish two days.  I am already excited for it even though it is a year away.
The other men's retreat is coming up at the end of February, but I have to preach that weekend since Pastor preached the weekend I went on my fishing trip.  I will still get to go up Friday night and hang out, but then will have to come home Saturday to do services.
We started our small groups back up.  So I am now either leading or attending five Bible studies a week.  There are actually two more that I don't attend, but I love the fact that we have that many options a week for people to attend.  Sunday morning between services, I am leading the Bible study as we work through Romans.  It has been awesome.  One, because I love Romans, and two, because it is very well attended.  Then Sunday evening, Ruth the DCE, leads a small group of young couples through a parenting class at 4.  I lead a small group at 5:30 and right now we are working through the book Spirituality of the Cross.  Our two groups ea supper together at 5 as our group is just starting and their group is finishing up.  It works nicely and is a pot luck style meal every week.  Then Wednesday mornings at 7 at Perkins the men's club meets for breakfast and Bible study.  I try to make that one, but sometimes sleeping in wins.  Pastor Ludwig leads that one, I simply attend to start my day off with the men.  I'll tell you what though, eating out even just that one time every week adds up in a hurry.  It's well worth the money though and is always a good breakfast.  Then Wednesday mornings at 9:30 is normally our women's Bible study.  Pastor Ludwig had been leading that one and I would attend once in a while.  However, right now a member is leading a Love and Logic class on parenting.  It is awesome.  If you ever have the opportunity to attend a Love and Logic class, I would highly recommend it.  And it works for grandparents just as much for parents.  So I am attending that every week right now.  Then Wednesday evenings at 5:30 I lead another small group that is currently working through C.S.Lewis' Mere Christianity.  That group grew quite a bit when we decided to work through that book.  It has been a great group with awesome discussion.  I love being a part of so many different groups with different people.
Now with Lent starting, our Wednesday night group will pause from meeting, but this works out because I am up to teach a couple units for the confirmation class.  So life is good and really is not near as busy as it sounds.  Most days, I secretly wish I was doing even more, maybe just cause I am crazy.  (Don't tell my boss that though)!  I know Lent will add to the busyness.  I am also getting excited to go to Phoenix here in two weeks.  The DCE, the two preschool teachers, and myself are flying down for the Best Practices conference.  A couple of our members who are sisters and their husbands own a house in Phoenix and they have kindly agreed to let us stay there and use their car.  My friend Chris is going to stay with us as well so we will have five adults and Chloe, the DCE's one year old, all in one house.  It will be a blast to see all my classmates and friends who will be there, plus I hope to see all of my cousins, aunts and uncles that all live down there.  Pastor Ludwig and I have agreed to take turns going every other year so after I go this year, I wont get to go back for another two years.
I have been reading through 1 and 2 Peter, 1,2, and 3 John, and Jude.  You know those lesser know books.  For being so short, they are filled with some very wise words.  It amazes me how they warn what the enemy will try to do to hinder the Gospel and how all of those things are really happening in our world right now.  God's Word truly is active and speaks to our current situation just as much as it did in the beginning of the church life.  Beware of the false teachers trying to lead you astray with their words of deceit, like all those trying to get you accept what society deems as acceptable rather than God's Word.  Stand fast in the true confession of Christ, be strengthen in His Spirit and through His Word.  My prayers are for the salvation and safety of you all.  In Christ, Amen.
